Time really flies! last Friday we had an early celebration for Alice’s 3rd birthday with Sim Design.
2019 first trip!
To kick off year 2019, design ninja A & T spent a week in Hong Kong and China. It’s going to be a great year, we can feel it already!
mero launches in Shanghai
Since one launch event just wasn’t enough, we had another! Sunday December 9th was our official Shanghai launch party to celebrate the arrival of meroware in China. The entire team from SIM Design was in full attendance to mark our first chapter of mero outside Japan.
It was an action packed weekend in snowy Pudong. A big thanks to the Jing Republic VM team (we love you 小方), the bakery team who spent all day making our custom mero treats, floor manager Paul, and of course the one who made it all possible (masterchef) Barry Lee! Secondly, we also couldn’t have done it without the support of the most fabulous White Bazaar team 白集 from Beijing who helped our vision come to life. Our gorgeous photography was taken by 纯真博物照相馆 after a rigorous talent hunt to find a photographer in Shanghai that could match our style.
Last but not least, a big thank you to our internal group’s team members who got tricked into thinking it was a party but instead spent two days hanging, glueing, folding, moving and cleaning. (oops did we forgot to mention all the customisation needed hands to put it together? #sorrynotsorry)
We felt the love from Shanghai moms and their families. Mr. Swan was trampled by dozens of laughing toddlers (it’s ok that’s what he’s there for) and everyone left with their own decorated box of cookies or cupcakes from our workshops. Is fair to say we earned a good rest over the holidays. Cant wait for 2019!

Last weekend we hit a major milestone for SIM Design, our brand meroware’s birthday celebration in Tokyo! If only our guests knew that we were hand cutting loose little threads on their gift bags and sanding down the sharp corners of our custom product display just a few weeks before. The SIM ninjas were on overdrive trying to get everything printed, wrapped, shipped to Japan for launch.
It was a mero explosion at Tenoha in Daikanyama. Maybe we went overboard, even having customized crayons moulded at the studio. Not pleasant, but the one day of breathing melting plastic-y crayon air was worth it! How amazing it was to see our product finally reach the hands of our moms & kids and feel them share our joy. Ok that’s a lie, I feel the amazement today 10 days later as the adrenaline finally is winding down. Watch the insane time lapse video of our one hour set up and you will see why

Starbucks To Go Strawless By 2020, Now Giving You An Adult Sippy Cup Lid →
The urge to go strawless is not lost on anyone, nor is the impact that these non-recyclable bits of plastic have on the environment and those who inhabit it.
As of today, Starbucks, one of the heavy hitters for plastic straws, has pledged to replace their iconic green straws from its 28,000 stores with paper and compostable straws and strawless lids.
Sounds awesome, right?
Before you start jumping for plastic-free joy, let's take a look at their solutions.
Yes, the compostable straws are a great way to go, especially for people who dislike the feel of ice touching their precious lips when they take a sip. The only issue is, according to Colleen Chapman, vice president of global and social impact for Starbucks, the move to go entirely to compostable straws was not favorable due to the lack of composting facilities available.
